Differentiation in the Marketplace

In a competitive beverage market, what are producers doing around the globe to differentiate themselves in the marketplace?

Consumers are increasingly demanding more premium beverage products. Their decisions are no longer driven purely by price but by the promise of quality, experience and are often conscious of the effects on their health.

Normally we only talk about the supply of wine or beer packaging, but did you know that we can also provide packaging for cider, RTD’s, soft drinks and the ever growing trend of Kombucha?

As consumers continuously become wary of their health and sugary beverages, they are seeking out healthier substitutes. Kombucha, a fermented tea beverage, has been around for over 2,000 years but has become somewhat a new trend among the health conscious and has made the beverage market soar. Normally bottled in a 330ml bottle, we have seen an increase in demand for the 330ml Amber GLSAM118R07.

Alternative bottle formats have also become prominent in the wine industry l. Half bottles (375ml) are harnessing a lot of attention, as are single serve 187ml. This is due to the change in the way that alcohol is consumed. It was found that 25% of wine consumers would be more likely to try a wine, if in a smaller size bottle. The demographics have changed. With the rise of the Millennials, many consumers are health conscious. There are more young professionals who are living alone, who just want to have a glass of wine after work and don’t want the wastage. More professionals are starting families later in life, so are more likely to indulge their income on more premium wines, as they don’t have the costs of raising children.

It was not just the different bottle formats that stood out at the Prowein, London Wine Fair, but also the bottle shapes. Wineries have started taking cues from beer and spirits. There have been a range of bottles moving into more masculine spirit bottles. Cupio, by Accolade, is a great example of this. In many instances, fragrance type looking bottles are now being used as wine bottles.

We have also seen the square heeled bottles become extremely popular. O-I launched the GLS31532 9 months ago which has been extremely popular.
